Communications Committee:

Ensures timely and accurate internal and external communications about the WCA through various media including the Club's official website, social media groups, newsletters and e-blasts.
The committee assists other WCA committees with marketing and promoting their events and programs, including online registration for events, review of flyers, press releases and official correspondence and to inform and engage our members and community.

Writers' Reading Group

The Writers' Reading Group aims to foster creativity and connection among our members who write or are interested in writing.

The Writers’ Reading Group will hold our regular meeting to discuss our own chain novel and talk about ideas for continuing to work with it or trying something new.

Anyone who is interested in joining us is welcome. Please email Paige Hassall to receive a link to the novel and be kept up to date on any changes or announcements.

Girls Gotta Run Foundation Athletic Scholarship Program

In 2006, Girls Gotta Run Inc. was established as the first and only 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting Ethiopian girls from under-resourced communities who were training to become professional runners. Girls Gotta Run Foundation invests in girls who use running and education to empower themselves and their communities in Ethiopia.

This grant supports a holistic, community-rooted program that provides full academic support (tuition, uniforms, tutoring, supplies); weekly life-skills sessions (including reproductive health, leadership, and financial literacy); daily lunch to support nutrition and attendance; health support and hygiene kits; sports kits; coached running; and opportunities to participate in local and regional races.

Mothers will play a central role: they will be employed to prepare meals (creating income and ownership), invited to participate in savings-and-loan cooperatives that promote entrepreneurship and household stability, and offered vocational skills training.

This project will address the root causes of dropout (poverty, early marriage, and lack of support) and keep girls in school while strengthening families and community resilience.

This is a potluck dinner with a small educational component. Money that otherwise would be spent on dining out is donated instead.

Over the past several years, we have raised over $49,000 for Together Women Rise.

Good Books for Good Works

A Collaboration with the Book House and Little Book House of Stuyvestant Plaza

The Community Service Committee is pleased to announce a favorite project, our annual fundraiser for school libraries. Co-sponsored with our wonderful partner, the Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza, the event will be held at the store and will benefit the library at the Watervliet Elementary School. There are approximately 650 students in grades K-5 at the school.

Susan Novotny, owner of the Book House, donates at least 20% of the proceeds from the evening of shopping.

Shop any time between 4 and 8 p.m. on the 19th to have your purchases count towards the fundraiser. The favorite part of the evening is the presentation by the Book House Staff on book recommendations for adults and children. The talk will begin at 5:15 pm and last for about an hour.

The event is open to the public, and we ask you to help spread the word by downloading the flyer and telling your friends, neighbors, and book clubs to join us on November 19th!
