Through its various fundraisers, the Club contributes annually to local charities serving women and children. In 2017, the WCA raised $3,600 for the Feed and Read Program, sponsored by the Homeless and Travelers Aid Society of the Capital District. The program provides weekend backpacks filled with food and a book to Albany school children. In 2016, the WCA raised $10,000 and donated it to Capital Region Sponsor-A-Scholar to support an Albany High School student as she prepares for and then attends college. Our annual Good Books for Good Works event, a fun evening at the Book House in Stuyvesant Plaza, raises funds for a different public school library every year.
Club members perform community service such as making dinner at the South End Children's Cafe and at the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless, both in Albany. They maintain gardens at two local shelters and worked on a neighborhood group's street beautification project. They held a baby shower to provide needed items for two young mothers who were being assisted by St. Paul's Center, a Rensselaer-based shelter for homeless women and their children.
The Club also proudly hosts community events such as the Sponsor-A- Scholar graduation and reception, and the Capital Region chapter of Dining for Women, an organization that supports grassroots programs around the globe to improve the lives of women and children.
Additionally, the Club organizes collections of food, personal care items and dental supplies, bedding, children's bathing suits, handbags and winter coats for local non-profits. Recipients have included Grassroot Givers and the Homeless and Travelers Aid Society.
